Bogotá is a growing city with a lot of difficulties shared by most of the Latin American cities nowadays, like the social and economic segregation, that tempt to produce areas of accentuated poverty, inequity, and insecurity, while other areas of the city have services and a better environment; problems related with the distances and the traffic that makes these cities difficult to move around; and among other problems.
Urban development in Bogota, directed since I936 by successive land usage plans, has given Bogotá a semicircular shape, with Avenida El Dorado as its central axis. Avenida El Dorado is a street connecting downtown with El Dorado Airport, located near the Bogota River Important government offices, universities, and business centers line this arterial highway. These include most ministries, the city administration, the Universidad Nacional public university campus, and the Salitre residential complex.
There are over a thousand barrios or neighborhoods in Bogota. The highest socioeconomic strata live in the north and northeast of the city, while the most deprived strata are at the south. The middle-class areas are in the center the west and the northwest of the city.
