It is an outstanding work of architecture and art. It was part of the extensive estate of the Franciscans and was rebuilt, after the 1785 earthquake, by Fr Domingo de Petres and the engineer Domingo Esquiaqui. Its wealth of ornamentation is a compendium of the inexhaustible creative artistry of carvers, sculptors, artisans, and local and foreign painters.
The high altar, a splendid creation of Ignacio García de Ascucha and Lorenzo Hernández de la Cámara, is one of the masterpieces of local school Colonial carving in Bogota. The magnificent Moorish beams and freestanding figures are considered among the best of XVII Century Spanish Colonial imagery.
