San Diego Historic Church and Monastery is built in the early XVII Century, was a Franciscan community. It stands on what was once farmland, by the old road to Tunja. All that survives of the original monastery is the church, with part of the cloisters. In 1627 Our Lady of the Fields Chapel was added to house the stone statue of the Virgin, who was deeply venerated by the indigenous communities and farm workers in the area. La Recoleta stands in the middle of Centro Internacional, one of the most important financial centers in the city. Modern offices, elegant restaurants and cafes are in sharp contrast with San Diego’s colonial architecture.
