Bogota is located in the center of the country, at a latitude of 4ºN, and it is administratively organized as an independent district located within the department of Cundinamarca. Its urban area spreads over 307 square kilometers, in the vast and flat plateau in the Eastern Andean mountain range known as the “Bogota savanna”.

Geographical limits and population, a mountain chain -part of the Andes- forms the eastern limit of the plateau. The mountains, usually known as Cerros Orientales, are the background against which the city’s silhouette is shaped. The Monserrate and Guadalupe hills, both crowned by a church, are two important reference points in the city, The sanctuary of The Fallen Christ of Monserrate has been a center of pilgrimage since Colonial times.

To the west, the city borders with the Bogota River and to the south with the foothills of Paramo de Sumapaz. The agricultural lands of the Sabana spread out to the north. This is the setting of the vast sprawl of the metropolis, with a population of almost seven million.
