This is Bolivar’s House, it’s the location of the Santander History Academy and it harbors a museum with over 4.000 pieces about the archeological and artistic richness of this area of the countries’ northeast.
The government of Nueva Granada acquired it and gave it to Bolivar in 1820, as an expression of gratitude for his devotion to the cause of independence. Bolivar used it as a private retreat and a place to celebrate his victories in the field. He fled there after the plot to assassinate him in 1828, foreseeing the imminent collapse of what was then called the Gran Colombia. Before his last journey to Santa Marta on the Caribbean, he gave the house to his friend ]ose Ignacio Paris.
The State acquired it in 1922 and set it up as a museum; it has recently been restored to its former glory, as it was when Bolivar lived there. Inside are the apartments of his companion Manuelita Saenz and Bolivar’s bedroom. It is said that Bolivar himself planted some of the trees in the garden outside. Furniture, clothing, weapons, documents and other objects belonging to The Liberator are also exhibited. This is where the Liberator took refuge after the well-known September Conspiracy, predicting the disintegration of the Great Colombia.
A wide program schedule is available at the House, including temporary exhibitions, video showings for children and adults, lectures and workshops. The Bolivar Rally, aimed to school students, is a self guide under the supervision of trained teachers.
