Bogota is located in the center of the country, at a latitude of 4ºN, and it is administratively organized as an independent district located within the department of Cundinamarca. Its urban area spreads over 307 square kilometers, in the vast and flat plateau in the Eastern Andean mountain range known as the “Bogota savanna”.
Bogota, capital of Colombia, is situated at the geographical center of the country, 2 600 meters (over 8,500 ft.) above sea level, on the eastern border of the Sabana de Bogotá, the highest plateau in the Colombian Andes.
The Bogota River crosses the plain from north to south reaching the spectacular Tequendama Falls. Several tributaries form small valleys which have been given over to agriculture and cattle-breeding.
Natural lakes and artificial reservoirs enhance the ecology and landscape of the region, and offer attractions for both local and foreign visitors.
Serrezuelita, Funza, Facatativa, Subachoque, Tabio, Tenjo, Cota, Chia, Cajica, Zipaquira, Nemocon, Sopo, Tocancipa, Gachancipa, Sesquilé, Chocontá, and Guatavita. All except for the first two have kept their names from the ancient Chibcha language.
