What is now called the 7th Street crosses over the old San Agustin River, so called because of the San Agustín Church and monastery located nearby. The river was the southernmost boundary of the old city. The still standing church and the now missing monastery make up this complex, dating back to l575. The Treasury now stands in the grounds of the convent. The church has been frequently rebuilt and restored, especially after the fire, which ravaged it in 1862. The monastery was demolished in 1937. The church is an example of artistic production for the propagation of the faith in the Nueva Granada and houses valuable carvings, paintings on wood and canvas, and murals in the side-chapels. The church, recently restored in 1988, has three naves and is built of dressed stone. Among its treasures is the Flight from Egypt by Gregorio Vázquez de Arce y Ceballos and a relief of Virgin of Altagracia. The delicately worked pulpit and high altar, the pendentives decorated with angels, and the portrait of the Virgin of Chiquinquira painted on wood, are outstanding. The side-altar of St. Rita, the stalls and the wide, profusely carved musicians gallery, are exceptionally fine.
