The house of famous poet Jose Asunción Silva is an old building dating back to the 18th century. It served as the poet’s house at the end of the 19th century.
It served as the stage for intellectual gatherings at the time of poet Silva, who committed suicide there on may 24th, 1896, at 31. It is now a first-rate cultural center in Bogotá.
In 1983, Corporación La Candelaria bought this house, and after nine months of restorations, it was reopened to the public. Since then, several poetry-related national and international events have been promoted there.
Services offered by this house include the library, the bookshop and the phonotheque. It also treasures a photographic archive of Colombian poets, from which reproductions can be made. Guided tours are offered to schools and university groups, for the blind and the elderly, including a tour of the house and an account on the life of the poet. The program Poetry a la carte includes a printed copy of the requested poems in quality stationery.
