Bogotá is rich with history, culture and adventures. Travellers can find a great variety of places to visit in every corner of the city and at any time. Following you will find 10 tourist attractions in Bogotá that will make your visit to the Colombian capital unforgettable.

Humedal La Conejera is located in the village of Suba, to the northwest of the city of Bogotá. It is one of the few wetlands that has survived the massive destruction of this type of ecosystem caused by population growth and increasing economic activities in the region (DAMA, 2000). Currently, this wetland is one of the best conserved ecosystems in the Capital District.

Humedal La Conejera is a 58.9-hectare Natural Reserve that has been declared as a District Ecological Park. Its main use is biodiversity conservation, and secondary uses include scientific research, environmental education and passive recreation, as provided in the Land Use Plan for the city (Decree 190/2004).

Formerly, up to 500 truckloads of debris and rubbish and 5 million litres of wastewater were dumped daily into Humedal La Conejera. Livestock from nearby farms grazed in the channel. Thus, it was necessary to develop gradual and precise ecological restoration processes oriented towards bathymetric rehabilitation and restoration of aquatic habitats for the conservation of endemic and migratory avifauna in the wetland.

Ecosystems – La Conejera Wetland Ecological Park

In Bogota, the La Conejera Wetland Ecological Park is a flagship environmental setting, and it is not for less, because in this space was where the environmental movement in favor of wetlands was born. La Conejera went from being one of the most affected ecosystems in the 90s, to being today one of the wetlands with the greatest recovery. You can find evidence of this recovery process by walking the ecological interpretation path, there you will be able to observe a great variety of native species of flora and fauna that inhabit the area (there is a record of 120 species of birds that remain in the wetland; tingua bogotana).

In this ecological setting you will observe migratory birds that come from different countries of the continent such as flycatchers, hawks and the famous Canadian ducks, among other species. But birds are not the only animals that you will find in this ecosystem, it is also the habitat of an important population of endemic curies from the Cundiboyacense highlands, weasels and, of course, rabbits.

The entrance to the District Ecological Park Wetland La Conejera is free, so add it to your list of places to visit, because you cannot miss the emblem of the Bogota wetlands: the marsh daisy, a beautiful and slender flower that only here you will find. In 2012, this wetland was selected as one of the best places for sustainable tourism in the world. Naturally it is Bogota!
