Carved from the depths of the largest salt deposit in Colombia (and one of the largest in America), the Salt Cathedral is a memorable and inspiring place. The Muiscas were the first to discover and take advantage of the enormous salt wealth of the place, but only until the 20th century was the current Cathedral consolidated.
Salt Cathedral of Zipaquirá is a magical place, enjoy a tour and immerse yourself in a history that is carved out of salt, The cathedral’s cross is located at 180 meters underground and creates a sense of peace and tranquility, During your visit you’ll see a reflecting pool of 80 square meters, the estaciones del Viacrucis (Stations of the Cross), the Complejo del Nartex (Nartex labyrinth), large naves and also a film in 3D called Guasa which shows the history of the salt dome and the work undertaken to build the cathedral. Also visit the museo de la Salmuera (Salt Museum), where you’ll learn about the timeline of the building in the visitor education halls, But that’s just the start of what’s on offer to visitors! Take a guided tour to see the mining route, try the climbing wall and enjoy green open spaces in the Parque Temático de la Sal (Salt Theme Park).
Zipaquira is a little city 49 Km from Bogota, where is located the World´s biggest Salt cathedral; it is a former salt mine that has been converted in a salt church by local and Colombian engineers. It presents a perfect symbology between the man work and the beautiful forms created by God and nature.
