The Church of San Ignacio is a temple located in the historical center of the city of Tunja in Colombia, initiated in 1620 by the company of Jesus, established in the city from 1610.
History: The imagery of the church arrived in 1640, including the Martyrs of Japan, San Francisco Javier, San Carlos Borromeo, sculptures that have disappeared. The original design of the work is inspired by the traditional model of the Jesuit temples consisting of a large nave and a presbytery. The Tabernacle was designed by Tunjanos around 1650. The church tower was mistakenly modified in 1905, being masked within the modern architectural ensemble.
Main attractions of the church of San Ignacio: The polychrome statue of the Crucified Christ dating from 1616, the statue of San Antonio – in polychrome wood and executed in the 17th century – and the altarpiece of the Nazarene, was built in 1557 and presents one of the largest oils in the city.
