Bolívar Square is the main square of the city where the statue of the Libertador (The Liberator) Simón Bolívar now stands, For three centuries the Pila del Mono, a commemorative monument of the first water fountain which supplied the inhabitants of the city stood here. In the square there have been two statues of Bolivar, the first was inaugurated in 1891 and then replaced in 1930 for the present sculpture, which is an artwork of the Italian Tito Ricci. This square has also been used as a market square and transport terminal.
