The Royal Plaza of Tunja (Spanish: “Plaza real de Tunja”) is a palace of republican neoclassical architecture of Tunja, declared national heritage of Colombia by Decree 3070 of December 20, 1990, place where the old Market Square of the city functioned.
A typical work of the Republican architecture in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, its characteristic Neoclassical pyramidal shape in addition to the Casino-style dome of Montecarlo are its main attributes. It was built when the centenary of the Battle of Boyacá was celebrated in 1919 by President Marco Fidel Suárez. Later, 6 pavilions were built around it, and was re-inaugurated by President Eduardo Santos on August 6, 1939, commemorating 400 years of the Hispanic foundation of the city. Paradoxically, one of the monuments of independence against the Spanish monarchy today is called “royal” square, perhaps in homage to the defeated king in 1819.
