Almost forty scuba diving sites, one of the best beaches in the Caribbean, a blue sea that’s also green and even purple, people brimming with friendliness… to name but a few of the charms of the islands of San Andrés, Providencia and Santa Catalina, located in the Colombian Caribbean.

While San Andrés is located 50 km (31 mi) south of Providencia, the Colombian archipelago is approximately 750 km (470 mi) north of the Colombian mainland. This archipelago encompasses a total area of 57 km2 (22 sq mi), including the outer cays, reefs, atolls and sand banks, with the area of the islands being 45 km2 (17 sq mi). In 2000, it was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, named “Seaflower Biosphere Reserve”, which not only includes the islands but also about 10% of the Caribbean Sea, amounting to a vast marine area of 300,000 km2 (120,000 sq mi). The purpose of this declaration is to ensure that the ecosystem, which is rich in biodiversity, is well preserved and conserved.

San Andres Colombia – Location Guide

The department’s capital is located on the northern end of the island. Named San Andrés but nicknamed El Centro, it is the department’s main urban center. Along the 30 km (19 mi) road that circles the island there are many picturesque beaches, coral reefs, cays, geysers, and coves. Also of note are La Loma, the town of San Andrés, the Baptist Church, Seaquarium, the large pond of La Laguna, and a freshwater lake amidst mangrove forests. There are coconut palm plantations, lush pastures, and tall native trees reaching 20 meters (66 ft). Surrounded by the warm Caribbean Sea, all of these features have made the island an “exotic holiday destination

San Andres Colombia – Climate and Temperature

The island experiences a tropical wet and dry climate that borders on a tropical monsoon climate. Average temperatures range from 24 °C (75 °F) to 30 °C (86 °F) in two periods dominated by dry and rainy spells. The rainy season is from September to December and also from May to June, when humidity is also high here. The trade winds from the north begin to blow in late October and during November and December until mid-January, the wind usually blows from the east, when there are storms in the northeastern Caribbean.

San Andres Colombia – What to Pack

As per usual for a Caribbean Island, you will experience a tropical, wet and dry climate. Expect some rain from September to December and May to June. Therefore, you’ll want to pack summer clothe.

During the day people wear beach outfits. At night things change. People dress reason- ably nice. People are ready to go to eat to a nice restaurant and then hit some night clubs.

There are department and grocery stores in San Andrés where you can find sim cards for all mobile companies (Claro, Tigo, Movistar, Virgin Mobile , etc). So you’ll be ok if you find your self with out data.

Also Wifi is usually pretty good in hotels. Your accommodation may have Wifi, but it is best to double check that before arriving.

Banks in San Andres Colombia

In San Andrés there are branches of the Banco de Bogota, Davivienda, Banco Agrario, AV Villa, Bancolombia, Caja Social, BBVA and Occidente Banks.
Schedule: Monday to Friday from 8 to 11 am. and from 2 to 4pm. extended hours vary according to the bank.

Getting around the Island

The island has roads which go around its perimeter as well as secondary roads connecting hamlets with its interior, including the avenida Colón (Columbus Avenue). To get around the island the best option is to hire a golf cart or one of the slightly larger and faster mulitas that have lights. You can rent them by hour or per day.
