The Aquarium is located on the far side of a sand bar where you can find a couple small buildings. It is about 200 yards from the island of Haynes Cay (also seen on maps by its Spanish name Islote Córdoba). That is the island with the red and white light house on it.
The Aquarium (El Acuario) is one of the most popular cays for tourists, it is located at 8 minutes by boat from San Andrés and gets its name from its transparent water which allows visitor to see the different marine species of the region. Hayenes Cay islet, a coral cay surronded by palm trees and abudnant vegetation, can be reached on foot from the Aquarium as the water that separates it from the Aquarium is shallow, making snorkeling the recommended activity here.
One place where it seems that walking on water is possible is the Aquarium; also called Rose Cay, in which the depth of the water is close to one meter. There, looking to the sides, people feel like they are in the open sea as they move towards Haynes Cay.
They get their name from the coral cord that borders one of its sides and that gives rise to a natural aquarium where you can admire the play of multicolored fish on the bottom of coral banks. Rose Cay receives the name of Aquarium in accordance with the amount of beautiful mangroves and fish that live around it.
From the Aquarium to Hayne’s Cay you can cross walking, snorkeling or swimming, as the depth of the water does not exceed fifty centimeters. Unlike the Aquarium, which is a large sandbar, Haynes Caye has a beautiful green appearance and is rich in fauna and coconut trees.
