Centro Historico (Historic Center) of Santa Marta is declared a National Monument in 1963. the historical center of Santa Marta posseses true architectural gems, many of them belonging to colonial times. the Paso Bastidas (fortified Promenade) or Malecon (boardwalk) located on the side of the avenue that borders the beach of the Bahia de Santa Marta (Santa Marta Bay) is the perfet place to take a stroll. It is a peasant promenade adorned with various scuptures including the monumento a la Cultura Tayrona(Tayrona Culture Monument), where you can observe the morro (hill) and the city’s lighthouse.

You’ll also find the Catedral de Santa Marta (Santa Marta Cathedral) a building datin from 1765 and declares a National Monument. Its Renaissance style is evident in marble sculptures and spacious interiors, and its altar stands out with the image of the Virgin Mary carved out of polychrome wood. The remains of Rodrigo de Bastidas, The founder of the ciaty, are preserved in this building, elevated to the category of Bassilica Minor by the Vatican in 1930.
