Parque de los Fundadores in Armenia is another of the geographical and historical referents of the city. It was built in the year 1963 and has a great significance for the Armenians. Its design is a map of the city, with large and leafy trees, well-tended gardens and a ditch that can be crossed by small stone passages.
In the central part of the park is the monument to the founders: the trunk and the ax, sculpture of the master Roberto Henao Buriticá that was inaugurated on the fiftieth anniversary of the city, October 14, 1939, in the old cemetery of San Sebastián as Mausoleum Of the Founders. This monument represents the fortress of the colonists to demolish the forest and to become to the land of culture and of room.
On the south side there is a monument to the main founder Jesús María Ocampo Toro, Tigrero, and his wife María Arsenia Cardona Buitrago, erected in 1998 by the sculptor Orlando Londoño. It is a mound, like a large stone on top of which there are some tiger heads, which reflects an ancient tomb, where are the remains of the couple. And next, a Guadual crowned by a pair of parrots, made all in bronze. At the end of the park in this same side is a square of hard material where bazaars and other civic activities of the city are realized.
In the north side of the Park pays homage to the love. There was installed part of a huge tree that was hollowed inside, brought from the village of Maravélez. In that tree loved a couple of young men in hiding from their parents. And they made of the tree his tomb, because one day they were found embraced, but dead. The tree was then struck down by lightning, but its hollowed part was left undisturbed, which was moved to the Park and covered with concrete to form a tribute to love.
