History of Museum Castle Medellin

The Castle was built in 1930 by H.M Rodríguez, the first construction firm in Medellín. Its architecture was inspired by the castles of the Loire Valley in France.

Initially, it was the country residence of Mr. José Tobón Uribe, who brought the plans directly from Paris.

The style of the castle is medieval Gothic. Gothic for its towers finished in needle and medieval by the ogival form of its doors and windows.

In 1943 Diego Echavarría Misas bought El Castillo and turned it into his place of residence. Don Diego and Doña Benedikta Zur Nieden, his wife, remodeled it and expanded its halls with the purpose of making it a museum and bequeathing it to the City as a cultural center.

From 1971 by means of public deed, El Castillo, its grounds and gardens stopped being residence to become House Museum.

Diego Echavarría Misas was the son of Don Alejandro Echavarría and of Mrs. Ana Josefa Misas. Mr. Alejandro founded the Textile Factory Coltejer, Corona and Hospital San Vicente de Paul; And Doña Ana, the Amparo Infantil Santa Ana.

Don Diego was born in Medellin in 1895, at the age of 16, he was sent to Germany, where he studied at the Paedagogium (pedagogical school) in Godesberg, near Bonn. Then married Dona Benedikta Zur Nieden of German origin; Of this union was born only a daughter whom they called Isolde.

Aware of the needs of the culture and education of the people of Medellin, Don Diego founded the Library of Itagüí in 1945 to contribute to the education of the population of Antioquia, he also donated the house where he lived before coming to live in the Castle, located in the municipality Of Itagüí, called Ditaires; In honor to his wife Dita (so they called it to her by affection), airs because at the time this zone was very unpopulated and there they arrived all the winds. Today Ditaires is a convention house, its gardens, the Ditaires stadium and places suitable for the country recreation of the municipality of Itagüí. After the death of his daughter Isolda, Don Diego donated a lot and founded the school Isolda Echavarría. Through the travels, the Echavarría spouses were endowing their home with works of all kinds, as they had forecasted their house would become the cultural heritage of their beloved city.
