Guatavita is a municipality and town of Colombia in the Guavio Province of the department of Cundinamarca. Guatavita is located 75 km northeast of the capital Bogotá. It borders Sesquilé and Machetá in the north, Gachetá and Junín in the east, Guasca and Sopó in the south and in the west are Tocancipá and Gachancipá.

Sites of interest of Guatavita
All the buildings in the town were built after 1967, following a planned flooding carried out during the construction of the Tomine reservoir that submerged the structures in the area. The current whitewashed houses with terracotta tiles and rustic walls draw the attention of visitors and enliven the historic center of the new Guatavita, which also has spaces like the Plaza Civica (Municipal Square), the Puente de los Enamorados (Lovers’ Bridge), the museo Indigena (Indigenous Museum), market square, hotels and restaurants.

How to get to Guatavita, Cundinamarca
North highway – Sopo – Guatavita
This route is the shortest and only have to pay a toll to come to Guatavita and no toll is paid back. Exit on the north highway take the deviation on the right hand side towards the municipality of Sopo (Please! Not the park but the town that is later). Once you reach the village, you will find a roundabout where you should take to the right and follow the main road. Then you will find a Y, on the right you will go towards Calera and on the left you will find Guasca and Guatavita. Take the route on the left. Without leaving the road following the main road and without entering Guasca, it reached Guatavita.
North highway – Sesquilé – Guatavita
This route is faster because you go very fast on the motorway to Sesquile and from there to Guatavita are 15 minutes but you have to pay two tolls. Exit on the north motorway and after the second toll you will find a bridge where you will find the entrance to Sesquile on the right. Without deviating from the main road, it reached Guatavita.
Circunvalar Avenue – La Calera – Guatavita
This route was the one we used because our route started from the city center so to cross it and avoid the strong traffic on Saturdays was the best option, take the entire circunvalar towards the lime, after passing the lime Follow the route to guasca, and then find the crossing that indicates the route to guatavita, it is quite easy to locate.
How to get to Guatavita without a car
At weekends, take a bus from the Portal Norte and change in Sesquilé to get to the town of Guatavita, or take a bus from calle 72 with carrera 9 to La Calera and take a bus to Guatavita town from there. If you want to visit the lagoon, you can take a taxi or a colectivo bus from Guatavita town.
