The ancestral traditions are reflected in the indigenous names of its municipalities, the typical dishes and many of the tourist attractions. The name of the department derives from the indigenous word Cundinamarca, which means “land or height where the condor inhabits”.

The customs of the Cundinamarqueses are marked by the development of a culture around the agricultural activity, main economic source of the muiscas or flies. During the Conquest and the Colony, aboriginal and Spanish customs were mixed in an intense process of mestizaje, which resulted in many of the customs that prevail in the department today in gastronomy, music, dance and religion.

The legend of ‘El Dorado’ gathers historical passages of the Muisca culture and hidden treasures in the lagoon of the Guatavita cacique.
