Olaya Herrera National Park is embedded in the collective memory of the inhabitants of Bogota. Since it was opened in 1934, the surrounding area became one of the prime residential areas in neighborhoods such as La Merced and La Soledad. The Javeriana University moved to its northern edge. It is an area of great value in terms of the environment, landscape, culture, and sports. It contains a wide diversity of flora and fauna, abundant springs, and flourishing woodlands. Some of its well-known features are the clock donated by the Government of Switzerland, the monument in honor of General Uribe, and the fountains. For sports, there are soccer, minisoccer, hockey pitches, tennis, volleyball, and netball courts. There is also the relief map of Colombia, the children’s playground, and a theater (El Parque), completed in 1936 and remodeled in 1997 to stage performances forthe young and hold theater workshops and courses.
Olaya Herrera National Park covers 283 hec tares and heights from 2,600 to 3,154 meters, which makes it an ideal spot for hiking trips and sports. On the sou them side, the park borders La Merced neighborhood, famous for the English architecture of its houses.
