The legendary Estación del Cable Building, an icon of the city, is located in a wooden mansion and served as the main station of the Cable Aéreo (Cable Transport system), which connected Manizales to the town of Mariquita in the department of Tolima. This construction, which was declared a National Monument in 1996, is currently the headquarters of the Faculty of Architecture of the Universidad Nacional (National University). Next to the Cable Station is the Torre de Herveo (herveo Tower), built between 1915 and 1920 by Englishman James Lindsay. The Pyramid shaped tower is 52 meters high and was initially built to replace one of the metal supports for the Cable Aereo system. Due to its historical and cultural value the decision was taken to restore it, so it could be displayed as a constant reminder of the tenacity and drive of Manizales and its people.
